Read the Sitemap
Every screen, the planned links and the paths actually taken. · 3 min readThe Sitemap tab shows every screen of the prototype at a glance, with the links you planned in Figma and the paths your testers actually took. It answers two questions: is what you planned being used, and do your testers take paths you didn’t plan?
How it’s laid out
The starting screen sits alone on the left. Each screen is then placed in the column matching the minimum number of clicks to reach it from the start. The layout is automatic: screens can’t be moved by hand.
Reading the arrows
- Solid arrow: a planned link that was used. The thicker it is, the more sessions went that way.
- Dotted arrow: a planned link nobody used. That button may be badly placed, hard to see, or unnecessary.
- Gray arrow: a path taken but not planned as a link, for example going back or closing a window. The “Unplanned” box in the legend hides or shows them.
Explore
- Hover a screen: only its links stay highlighted.
- Click a screen to open its heatmap, and a taken arrow to see the sessions that followed it.
- Drag to move around, zoom with a pinch or with Ctrl and the scroll wheel; “Fit” shows the whole map.
- The filters at the top of the page (period, audience, device…) also apply to the Sitemap.
For prototypes of 50 screens or more, screens are shown as lighter thumbnails, so the map opens fast. A prototype published before the Sitemap existed only shows the paths taken: publish it again from the plugin to also see the planned links.
